In school we use a synthethic phonics scheme called Read, Write Inc.  Children are regularly assessed to check their progress and are taught early reading in groups at just the right level for them.  Click the link below for an overview of the programme:

Below are two videos showing how to pronounce the sounds in a 'pure' way and how children begin to blend sounds into words.  These are the first steps in reading that children need to master.

As part of the Read, Write Inc programme, children practice spelling every day.  They will practice spelling using sounds they have previously been taught.   'Fred Fingers' are an essential part of our spelling routine.  Click the link below to see some spelling in action:

Each day, the books our children  have read during their Read, Write Inc lesson are taken home for further reading practice.
